“Don’t take democracy for granted” – Minister

Jema (B/A), Jan. 22, GNA – Mr Kwadwo Adjei-Darko, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development on Wednesday urged Ghanaians, especially the youth, not to take democracy for granted for the promotion of peace and stability in the country.

“The youth of today are the future leaders of tomorrow”, he said and advised them against showing disrespect to people in authority. Addressing a people’s assembly at Jema in the Kintampo District of Brong Ahafo, Mr Adjei Darko advised the youth to steer away from violent behaviour and lead exemplary lives as role models to others.

He announced that the Ministry would institute a policy that would enable District Chief Executives to meet, at least once a week, with the people to share ideas, views and discuss issues that would help in the development of the country.

The Minister advised eligible voters to register when the voters’ register is re-opened and that they should be vigilant to ensure transparency in the December elections.

Nana Kwadwo Seinti, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, cautioned the youth against violence, which he said, “retards progress”. He urged Ghanaians to bury their political differences and help the government in the development process.

The Regional Minister appealed to farmers to stop sending naked fire to their farms during the dry season to prevent the outbreak of bushfires.

In answer to a questioner, Mr John Bomfeh, Kintampo District Chief Executive, gave assurance that deteriorating schools in the area would soon be rehabilitated.

Later at Busunya in the Nkoranza District, Okatakyie Agyeman Kudom 1V, Omanhene of Nkoranza Traditional Area, expressed gratitude to the government for the people’s assembly concept, which he said showed that “democracy in the country is growing”.
