Don’t send children to farms during school hours

Awutu-Fianko (C/R), May 26, GNA- The Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Director of Education, Mr Frank Swanzy Essien, on Friday appealed to parents and guardians in the Awutu-Fianko area to desist from taking their children to farms during school hours. Mr Essien was speaking at an emergency meeting with communities on how to improve the enrolment and performance of girls at the Fianko Junior Secondary School.

The total population of the school is 32 made up of 14 girls and 18 boys.

The JSS One has nine boys and eight girls, while JSS Two has nine boys and six girls.

The meeting found that most parents took away their children from classes to farm while some children came to school without food. Mr Essien expressed concern about recent BECE where only one girl from the school was said to have taken part in the examination. The Public Relation Officer of the directorate, Mrs Veronica Bondzie, appealed to parents to stop sending their children, especially girls out of classes to sell during market days at Bawjiase.

A spokesman for the community thanked Plan International, an NGO operating in the area, for constructing a six-classroom block and a library with books for the town.
