The National Imam of Ahlu-Sunnah Wal-Jamaah (ASWAJ), Sheikh Umar Ibrahim Imam, has urged Ghanaian Muslims to act responsibly in marriage and childbearing, warning against marrying and having children without the means to care for them.
Speaking on Friday, September 26, at the inauguration of a new mosque and resource centre in Abeka, Accra, Sheikh Umar said irresponsible family practices were contributing to rising crime and insecurity in parts of West Africa.
He advised Muslims to marry one and limit childbirth to a maximum of three children if they can adequately provide for them.
“We Muslims must wake up. Don’t marry by heart and give birth by heart,” he advised.
He explained that while the Qur’an permits Muslims to marry up to four wives, it is only permissible if they have the means to care for them and their children.
Sheikh Umar Ibrahim Imam urged Muslims to marry one than to risk raising children without education or skills, who may later contribute to insecurity.
The newly built mosque and resource centre, located behind the Abeka Market, was constructed by Kuwaiti humanitarian organisation DirectAid at a cost of GH¢3 million. Sheikh Umar officially opened the facility together with Mr Sami Henedak Ahmed, Country Director of DirectAid, before a large gathering of worshippers, elders, and youth.
Mr Ali Abdul Salam Ali, Director of DirectAid, said the one-storey project, which took nearly two years to complete, would serve as both a house of prayer and a resource hub for the Abeka Zongo community.
