District needs more teachers

Breman-Asikuma (C/R), GNA – The Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District requires about 150 additional teachers to strengthen the capacity of a few trained teachers working in the district.

Mrs. Janet Ama Larsey, District Director of Education for the area told a forum at which Nana Prah Agyensam, a member of the Council of State, advised people in the district to co-operate with the district assembly to improve education, health, and agricultural activities in the area.

Mrs Larsey expressed the hope that if the strength of teaching staff in the area is increased, the tide of poor academic performance among students in basic schools in the district would change.

She, however, assured the government of her directorate’s determination to make good use of the materials and teaching staff under her command.

Earlier in an address, Mr Sampson K. Anfako, District Chief Executive mentioned the problem of inadequate teaching staff facing the district, and appealed to the government to assist the district with, at least “pupil teachers” to serve as an interim solution to the problem.

According to Mr Anfako, efforts are underway to train 40 teachers to support the Ministry of Education in its attempts at improving the situation. Meanwhile, health workers in the district have also called for the provision of adequate accommodation to solve the housing difficulty facing them.
