Kpone (G/A), April 25, GNA- Persons Living with Disability (PWD) on Saturday appealed to the government to ensure that parliament passes the law on the disability policy to end discrimination against them. Mr James Bortey, National President of the Hope for Life (HFL), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that supports disabled persons said the passage of the law would stop the discrimination against disabled persons.
Inaugurating the 18-member of Kpone branch of the HFL handicapped brothers and sisters association, Mr Bortey said disability is not a liability but wondered why they were constantly being discriminated against as this dampens their spirit.
“We want a clear-cut policy to present government strategies for mobilising and integrating PWD into the mainstream of the socio-economic lives of the communities” Mr Bortey stated.
Madam Sue Makowski, Coordinator of the Hope for life project said they aim at supporting the physically challenged to become self-sustained by giving them free training in various fields.
She said with funding from some NGOs in Holland over 300 physically challenged have received training in vocations such as dressmaking, carpentry, batik, tie/dye, and food processing.
Mr Abraham Tetteh Adumuah, Stevedore Officer of Golden Gate Services who chaired the function, called for unity among members and suggested that they should come out with projects that would benefit them.
