Did Bawumia lie about $13.9 million Veep building?

Following Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s accusation that the NDC government was to spend US$13million on the former’s edifice, it has emerged that no such monies were approved by the erstwhile Mahama government.

Close sources to the former Vice President Amissah Arthur’s office and subsequently confirmed by former senior officers at National Security have indicated that President Mahama’s government only approved a little over US$5million for the project.

The whopping amount of $13million being thrown about remains a proposal from the Architectural Engineering Services Limited (AESL) and reliable information suggests the previous government questioned the justification for the price variation on account of which no such payments were effected.

While speaking at the Action Chapel Good Corporate Governance Initiative earlier, Dr. Bawumia had indicated that the $13million was disclosed as the amount owed the contractor who was assigned to undertake the project.

The Vice President who was upset with the revelation questioned the alleged decision by the NDC government.

“I asked; how much is this house actually costing and I was shocked when I was told. Can you believe in Ghana we are building a house to house our Vice President, and this house is supposed to cost 13.9 million dollars?”

“I mean what sort of a house is this supposed to be? Is the gate made of gold? The pavement of gold?”
The blocks of gold? A house in Ghana for 13.9 million dollars? I could not believe it”, he added
