Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi praised Mohammed Kudus after the Ghana international helped his side beat Coventry City 3-1 on Monday night to claim their first Premier League victory of the season.
Kudus created the opening goal for James Maddison, supplying the assist as Tottenham took all three points against the newly promoted side. He played in an unfamiliar position but showed the attacking flexibility that allowed Spurs to gain control of the match.
De Zerbi was particularly encouraged by Kudus’ display after half-time, when he felt Tottenham found more space and posed a greater threat in attack.
“Kudus also, I liked his performance, and especially in the second half, because in the first half I think it was too difficult to find the space,” he added.
The performance marked only Kudus’ second start since January, following an extended period on the sidelines with injury. His return to the starting line-up against Coventry represents an important step as he attempts to regain full momentum and establish greater continuity in the Tottenham team.
Despite the disruption caused by his absence, the former West Ham United player has already made an impact during the current campaign. He has featured in six Premier League matches and provided two assists.
His latest contribution demonstrated his ability to create opportunities for team-mates while also adapting to different attacking responsibilities. Kudus is primarily regarded as an attacking midfielder, but his display in a less familiar role showed he can adjust to the demands of De Zerbi’s tactical approach.
The assist for Maddison’s opener was particularly valuable as Tottenham pursued their first league win of the campaign. The 3-1 scoreline gave De Zerbi a positive result as he continues to shape the side’s performances.
For Kudus, the match offered a chance to build on his return from injury and strengthen his place within the squad. His versatility gives Tottenham another option when selecting their starting line-up, while his capacity to create chances from different areas of the attack adds variety to the manager’s plans.
De Zerbi’s comments indicate that he was pleased with the Ghanaian’s improvement during the second half, when Tottenham were better able to exploit available space.
Kudus will now aim to maintain his fitness and develop consistency as he seeks to make a larger contribution to Tottenham’s season. The victory moved Spurs to their first league success of the campaign, while the assist against Coventry and the manager’s assessment provided further encouragement during the midfielder’s return to regular involvement.
