Day-old baby boy dumped at health centre

Widana (U/E), May 17, GNA – A day-old baby boy was found dumped in a carton on Tuesday dawn on the veranda of the health centre at Widana, near Bawku.

The child was delivered at home on Monday evening before the mother dumped him at the health centre.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency, the Medical Assistant of the centre, Mr David Awini, said a labourer found the child whilst performing her morning duties and informed him about the child. The Assemblyman, Abugrago Sali, said they were able to locate the house of the child’s mother but she absconded before their arrival. He mentioned her name as Ayishetu Apiliyaa, middle-aged with three children from a previous marriage, and it was believed she had escaped to neighbouring Togo.

Mr Sali said the younger sister was the one who advised Ayishetu to send the child to the health centre when she attempted to kill the child.

The child had been admitted at the Children’s Ward of the Bawku Presby Hospital since no family member has shown interest to take care of the him.
