Daniel Afriyie Barnieh Seals Move to FC Aarau After Zürich Exit

Former Hearts of Oak and FC Zürich forward Daniel Afriyie Barnieh has officially joined Swiss League side FC Aarau on a two-year contract, with an option to extend, the club confirmed.

The move marks a fresh chapter for the Ghanaian international, who will wear the number 18 shirt at his new club as he looks to reignite his career following a difficult spell at FC Zürich.

Barnieh, 24, had his contract mutually terminated by Zürich earlier this summer after struggling to cement a regular spot in the starting XI. He made 50 appearances for the Swiss Super League outfit, scoring twice and assisting four goals.

FC Aarau’s announcement was greeted with optimism from both fans and the technical team, who are hoping the talented attacker’s experience and versatility can help boost the club’s ambitions ahead of the 2025/26 season.

“We are thrilled to welcome Afriyie to Aarau,” said a club statement. “His experience at both the domestic and international levels will be a great asset to our squad.”

Barnieh rose to prominence as a talismanic figure at Accra Hearts of Oak, where he helped the Phobians win the Ghana Premier League and FA Cup titles before securing a move to Europe in 2023.

Having also featured for Ghana’s national team, including the Black Galaxies and U-20 sides, Barnieh is seen as one of the country’s most promising attacking prospects.

As he looks to rebuild momentum and find his scoring boots, all eyes will be on how quickly Afriyie Barnieh adapts to his new surroundings and whether this move could propel him back to top-flight football in the near future.
