The President of the Federation of Cuban Women, Madam Vilma Espin de Castro, last night commended the 31st. December Women’s Movement(DWM) for its efforts at emancipating and empowering Ghanaian women. She said her visit to some of the movement’s projects such as ‘gari’ processing factory, day care and vocational centres indicated the Ghanaian woman’s determination to assist in the development of the nation. Madam de Castro who was speaking to newsmen in a pre- departure interview at Kotoka International Airport after a six- day visit to the Country said she was pleased with Ghanaian women’s efforts at reversing obsolete traditions which militate against their development. She urged Ghanaian women to overcome illiteracy and create conditions that will enhance their total development. Madam de Castro noted that 40 years after the Cuban revolution, women have been in the forefront of Cuba’s development, adding: ”we can now boast of free health care, education and equality in all aspects of life”. The First Lady and President of the DWM, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, said Madam de Castro’s visit would go a long way to strengthen Ghanaian women’s quest for emancipation.
