Court orders rapist to be held in prison custody

The Juaso Circuit Court, presided over by Justice S.K. Sarpong Appiah, has ordered a 23-year-old palm wine tapper standing trial for rape to be held in prison custody.

Akwasi Gyamfi is accused of raping a 34-year- old married woman at Achiase near Bomfa in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality.

He pleaded guilty to the offence and would re-appear on Wednesday, November 28.

Police Chief Inspector Joseph Obeng told the court that the accused is a friend to the victim’s husband and that they both live at Achiase.

He said in the early hours of Monday, November 5, one Akua, an intimate associate of the woman, visited and foundher lying naked and unconscious in her room.

She also saw Gyamfi wearing only men’s brief and became suspicious. She therefore raised the alarm, attracting other people in neighbourhood, who arrested him.

The victim was rushed to the Konongo Odumase Government Hospital, where she later regained consciousness and recounted having become dizzy after taking a bottle of coca cola drink offered her by the accused.

Gyamfi confessed raping the woman after giving her a bottle of soft drink he had laced with drugs.
