Accra, Sept. 26, GNA – An Accra Circuit Court hearing the case of a Tema-based businessman, Prince Tsibu-Darko, who is in Police custody in connection with narcotic drug offences, on Monday ordered the Police to take the accused to the hospital for good medical care but turned down his bail application.
The Court after listening to both Prosecution and Defence Counsel’s submissions adjourned the matter to October 5.
Mr Gabriel Pwamang, who represented Tsibu-Darko, said his client had visited the hospital two times since the last adjourned date. Mr Pwamang, therefore, prayed the Court to admit Tsibu-Darko, who made his fifth appearance at the Court on Monday, to bail. He said they were ready to provide substantial surety.
“His life is very important and needs competent medical attention and the Court must supervise that as well.”
Tsibu-Darko, 49, whose plea is yet to be taken, is facing a charge of doing prohibited business relating to narcotic drugs. Some relations of Tsibu-Darko, who turned up in Court, shed tears and followed him quietly as the Police escorted him into custody. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) George Abavelim reminded the Court that the case had been referred to the Attorney General’s Department for advice.
ASP Abavlim said before coming to Court on Monday he had gone to check on the case docket but was asked to see the Chief State Attorney, Ms Gertrude Aikins but she was not in her office. He rang her but she indicated that she was in another court and he (Mr. Abavelim) should take an adjourned date.
The Court adjourned the matter to October 5 but asked the Police to take Tsibu-Darko to hospital for proper medical care. Tsibu-Darko owns Koreana Hotel and Kamoney Forex Bureaux in Tema. The facts of the case are that the Police after receiving intelligence reports mounted surveillance which revealed that the accused was doing business relating to narcotics.
