Court jails driver 25 months for careless driving

Samuel Baidoo, a 29-year old driver was on Tuesday sentenced to 25 months imprisonment in hard labour by a Circuit Court in Cape Coast for careless driving, which killed one Mr. Yaw Ewusie, 23 at Elmina.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of careless and inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm and was sentenced on his own plea.

The court, presided over by Mrs Florence Kai Otu, sentenced him to 36 months and 25 months on both counts respectively, to run concurrently.

Police Chief Inspector Charles Anku, who prosecuted, told the court that at about 2030 hours on July 31, 2011, Baidoo was driving a cab from Cape Coast to Elmina on the Takoradi-Cape Coast Highway, veered off the road into the pedestrian walkway and knocked down the deceased.

He said Mr. Ewusie sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Central Regional Hospital but died shortly on arrival.
