Court grants bail to “Bail contractor”

Accra, Jan. 14 GNA – An Accra Circuit Court on Monday was told how one Daniel Odartey Lamptey a.k.a David Bartels Kodwo Jnr, a plumber forged an indenture and used a pseudo name to deceive the Police to facilitate the bail of an accused person.

Lamptey who pleaded not guilty was admitted to a bail of GH=A2 10,000.

The accused was charged with three counts of possessing forged documents, impersonation and deceit of a public officer. The court, presided over by Mrs. Georgina Mensah-Datsa adjourned the case to January 29, this year.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr George Abavelim prosecuting said the complainant in the case was a Detective Inspector stationed at the CID Headquarters in Accra.

He said on January 12, this year a theft case of forged GOIL Fuel Coupons was referred to the Police Detective to investigate. The case, titled The Republic vrs Emmanuel Kwashie Amegashie and six others were put before an Accra High Fast Track Court, presided over by

Mr. Justice Acquaye. The accused persons were admitted to one billion cedis bail (GH=A2 100,000) with one surety to be justified. Mr Abavelim said on December 14, last year, the accused person provided an indenture on an immovable property and claimed ownership of it which was used for surety for one of the accused, Joshua Kwamina Asamoah, which turned out to be false.

He added that an Electoral Commission of Ghana’s Identity card (ID) No.22251351 marked polling station No. CO 20202, bore the name David Bartels Kwodwo Jnr with the photograph of the accused affixed to it. He said investigation later revealed that the accused person took GH=A2 800.00 cedis to facilitate the bail for Joshua Kwamina Asamoah, after charging them GH=A2 2,000 cedis.

The police said in his statement, the accused person admitted using a pseudo name to deceive the Police to facilitate the bail and added that he was not the owner of the document he presented to the Police.
