Shama (W/R) Nov.12, GNA-Mr. Anthony Evans Amoah, Western Regional Minister has noted with concern that many contractors whose activities serve as catalysts in the infrastructure development agenda of the government had not performed to expectation.
He therefore, charged the people, particularly assembly members and other opinion leaders to monitor the activities of contractors working on projects in the region and report the “non-performing” ones to their district assemblies for them to face the appropriate sanctions. The Regional Minister stated these at a durbar of chiefs and people of Shama to climax their annual Nye-eyi Pra festival on Saturday. He mentioned the Shama Senior Secondary School project, a designated model school as one of many such projects in the region, which had “fallen victim to non-performing contractors”. The commissioning of model school projects originally scheduled for October by the President had to be postponed because contractors failed to deliver on scheduled.
Mr. Amoah gave the assurance that the government was committed to meet the developmental aspirations of the people, there should remain loyal and support the i mplementation of programmes and policies of the government. He also called on the people to form environmental clubs and plant trees and participate in all activities towards the country’s 50th independence anniversary celebration. Mrs Angelina Baiden-Ammisah, Member of Parliament for Shama, in an address read for her expressed concern about the continued decline in standard of education in the area and called on chiefs to lead the crusade to find lasting solution to the problem. Nana Kweku Binnah III, Omanhene of the Shama traditional area appealed to the government to extend the school feeding programme to some schools in the area.
He advised the people to honour their tax obligations to enable the government to undertake more projects to enhance the area’s development. Odeneho Gyapong Ababio, President of the National House of Chiefs, who presided stressed that festivals must be used to unite the people to enhance their development efforts. He urged chiefs to be “development focused”, endeavour to modernise culture to enhance tourism and eschew litigation and disputes.
