Conflicts could lead to disasters -NADMO

Sunyani Oct 13 (Regina Benneh) GNA- Conflicts have been identified as another hazards which could lead to disaster in some parts of the country, said Nana Attah Afena, Brong Ahafo regional Coordinator of National Disaster and Management Oganization (NADMO). Nana Afena was addressing the press and members of regional Disaster Committee in a meeting to mark the regional celebration of a World Disaster Reduction Day in Sunyani. He said conflicts be it religious, chieftaincy, ethnic or political could affect lives and properties and therefore, there is the need to manage it. He said recent events clearly showed that the world is becoming more vulnerable to disasters as the number of lost in disasters are rising and economic cost has become great concern to most countries.

He suggested that disaster management should be incorporated in the curricular of Basic and Second Cycle schools to educate students on hazard identification, early warning system and disaster mitigation. The May ninth disaster and recent Volta lake disasters, other local and international disasters reinforce the need for Ghana to give priority attention to prevention and management of disasters.
