Community Health Nurses to go to court over intimidating directors

The Community Health Nurses Association says it will head to court to seek legal action since that is the only way its grievances would be addressed.

The Association is on strike claiming that the legislation to move members to the status of Nurses Assistants has not been ratified since November, 2015 when it was agreed upon.

Speaking in an interview on 3FM, the General Secretary of the Community Health Nurses Association of Ghana, Godsway Delima said the strike is being carried throughout the country but they are facing intimidation from the district directors and public health nurses.

Some have been told that their appointment would be terminated whilst have been threatened to call off the strike else they would not be given validation for payment.

“It’s been done throughout the country but we are facing intimidation of which we will process some directors for court. They are trying to prevent our community health nurses from embarking on strike. They are threatening them that they will terminate their appointment as community nurses and they will also not validate them for payment.

“It means the directors are saying that they are bigger than the labour law when the labour law permits us our right to strike when we are being treated unfairly, so we will be facing them in court very soon”.

He also debunked the assertions by the Ministry of Health that negotiations are ongoing to address the issue.

“The last time we met the minister was early March and he said that three weeks time we will hear from him, we have even written to him and even before the strike on the 11th May we wrote to them explaining that the three weeks have elapsed but there was no responds from anybody. Nothing was done.
