Communities to benefit from solar electrification project

Ayawora (W/R), May 5, GNA – A Director of Renewable Energy of the Ministry of Energy, Mr Wisdom Ahiataku-Togobo, has said about 60 communities in the country are to benefit from off-grid solar electrification project. He said the communities are those who were not captured in the national grid with emphasis on islands, remote and isolated areas. Mr. Ahiataku-Togbo made this known at Ayawora in the Ellembelle District during the installation of an off-grid solar panel in the community. The project, he said, is a Ghana government initiative being supported by the Spanish government which was designed for areas where the national electricity grid would not get to in the next five years. Mr. Ahiataku-Togobo said the purpose of the project was to improve health delivery services and encourage qualified medical practitioners to accept postings to off-grid rural communities on islands and lakesides. He said it would enable school children and teachers on islands and lakeside communities to have access to electricity, education audio-visual programmes as well as learn Information and Communication Technology(ICT) to enhance teaching and learning in rural areas. “It will also enhance the operations of security posts such as the Police, the Immigration and the CEPS in off-grid rural areas as well as improving the standard of living of beneficiary communities through the provision of solar streetlights and mobile phone charging facility.” Mr. Ahiataku-Togobo said the engineers working on the projects would train indigenes of the communities benefitting from the project and appealed to them to maintain the facility to attract other development projects to their communities.
