Communities construct ramps across highway

The inhabitants of New Akrade, South Senchi and staff of the Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL) in the Asuogyaman District have constructed speed ramps on the asphalted road that passes through the area to check speeding motorists, who often kill pedestrians.

Inhabitants around the ATL, mainly women, on Saturday began to construct ramps between the ATL and the VRA Hospital at Akosombo following the killing of a man and a 9-year-old pupil by motorists last week.

Some members of the community told the Ghana News Agency that they had been compelled to take that action because motorists disregarded road signs restricting their speed to 50 kilometres per hour in towns resulting in the killing of a number of pedestrians, especially children.

The Assembly Members for South Senchi and New Akrade Electoral Areas Ms Vicentia Vibah and Mr Samuel Adomako said motorists killed 13 people, including six children in the area last year.

They said five people including three children were killed on different occasions on the South Senchi Junction – Akrade – ATL stretch of the Kpong- Akosombo Highway between February and March 14.
