Communities benefit from boreholes

Bowohomoden (B/A), April 17, GNA – The government, with assistance of the World Bank, has constructed boreholes for communities in the Techiman municipality last year at a total cost of 950 million cedis. The beneficiary communities are Bowohomoden, Nkrankrom, Twimia, Boankrom, Buoyem, Jama/Temponim, Mangoase, Masidan, Tanoboase, Koase and Gyaukrom, Mr David Tontrong, Techiman Municipal Water and Sanitation Team leader, said on Wednesday.

He said the District Assembly and the communities provided five percent each of the project cost while the government, through the World Bank bore 90 percent.

Mr Tontrong who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency during an inspection of some of the boreholes, said a total of 102 more boreholes would be constructed this year for 64 communities at the cost of 5.1 billion cedis under the World Bank sponsored community water and sanitation programme.

Mr Tontrang said the government had declared this year as sanitation year and advised the people to embrace the programme. He said in addition to the projects, the water and sanitation unit would undertake health education programmes in communities that had benefited from the construction of boreholes to improve their living standards.

He said a total of 146 domestic toilets had also been completed in eleven communities.

The beneficiary communities include Tanoboase, Fiaso, Akrofrom, Krobo, Koase, Buoyem, Forikrom, Twimia-Nkwanta, Domeabra/Tuobodom, Nkwaeso and Mesidan.
