Transport fares have been reduced by 15% effective May 24, 2025, according to commercial transport operators.
Speaking to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Abass Imoro, he asserted that various stakeholders, including the transport ministry, after a series of deliberations today, May 19, 2025, arrived at the 15% reduction.
The reduction is expected to include all commercial transport operators, including long-distance buses.
Mr. Imoro, however, described the action as a consideration, noting that other vital components, such as spare parts and lubricants used in determining fare prices, were overlooked since there hasn’t been any reduction in their prices.
“There hasn’t been any reduction in other price determinants, but we just had to be considerate about the fare reduction,” Mr. Abass stated.
Being optimistic that the prices of other determinants will reduce in the coming days, Mr. Imoro further stated that even if fuel prices should see an upward adjustment in recent times, the group does not intend to increase fare prices anytime soon.
Calls for transport fare reduction have heightened over the past few weeks now as the cedi makes gains against other world trading currencies, most importantly the dollar.
The cedi has over the last one month made a significant increase against the dollar by 19%, ranked worldwide as one of the best-performing currency.
While a few traders, including malls and marts, have started reducing the prices of their goods and services to reflect the cedis gains, commuters have been pressuring transport operators to do same, since they’re quick to increase prices when the dollar makes significant gains against the cedi.
This comes as a warm relief for commuters, traders, and all citizens, as the move has been long awaited.
