Cocoa buying company official, accomplice arrested for fake currency

Nyinahin (Ash), March 16, GNA – Mr Kofi Adjei, District Officer of Amalgaro Cocoa Buying Company, a licensed cocoa buying company, at Samreboi in the Western Region and his accomplice, Prince Kofi Adjei, are helping the Nyinahin police in their investigations into the use of cedi notes believed to be fake.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency at Nyinahin on Thursday, Police Detective Sergeant Daniel Owusu said on March 13, this year, Mr Adjei was driving his Opel Omega private car with registration number GT 7248 Q from Samreboi to Kumasi. He said on reaching Kwanfinfin on the Samreboi-Kumasi road, he bought some petrol worth 280,000 cedis from one Fuseini Mohammed, a wayside filling station attendant.

Sergeant Owusu said after Adjei had paid the attendant in 20,000 cedis notes, the attendant after careful observation detected that the notes were fake. He said Mohammed then raised the alarm and Adjei was arrested. Sergeant Owusu said when the car was searched, more counterfeit cedi notes in different denominations were found. During interrogations, the official mentioned one Prince Kofi Adjei as the one who gave him the money. He said Prince was later arrested and the two would be arraigned before court at Nyinahin on Friday.
