Coalition of Democrats to help ensure free and fair runoff

Ho, Dec. 23, GNA – The Coalition of Democrats, a non-partisan group, is to complement the efforts of the Electoral Commission and the National Commission on Civic Education in ensuring free and fair Presidential Election Runoff on Sunday.

The group would undertake voter education on the electoral process, encourage voters to exercise their franchise as well as secure peaceful elections.

Mr Simon Amegashie-Viglo, Spokesman of the group, stated these at a press conference in Ho to outdoor the group, which he said had representation across the country. He expressed worries about the low voter turn out and the number of rejected ballots and expressed the hope that things would change during the runoff.

Mr Amegashie-Viglo said members of the group had already begun house to house and person to person education on the electoral process and called for the cooperation of all.

He urged the Government not to close the Ghana-Togo border during the runoff because many people were disenfranchised during the General Election on December 7 2008, when the border was closed.
