China donates logistics to Ghana Armed Forces

Accra, June 4, GNA – China on Friday moved a notch higher in strengthening ties with Ghana when she donated specialised military vehicles and accompanying spare parts to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). The vehicles, valued at 1.5 million dollars, included troop carriers, trucks, field ambulance, and a tanker.

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Hu Wenzhe handing over the vehicles to GAF at Burma Camp in Accra said the gesture was to further strengthen the cordial relationship between both countries and their armed forces. He said China looked forward to strengthening ties with Ghana, adding, “I am sure there would be more cooperation in future not only in the military but in other areas.

“I see this as a blessing for the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana, China and our friendship”, said Mr Hu whose duty tour ends in July 2010. Defence Minister, Lieutenant General John Henry Smith receiving the vehicles expressed government’s appreciation and that of the military establishment to China for the vehicles, saying, “I pray that the relationship between China and Ghana explore more fields and stay healthy over the years”.

He said government’s determination to improve facilities at GAF was “gradually bearing fruits”, reaffirming that the military would be equipped with new technologies and equipment to ensure efficiency, confidence and high morale.

“Receipt of these vehicles is a step in the right direction in expanding the horizons of our defence front,” he added. The Defence Minister cautioned recipient units of GAF to ensure the vehicles were well maintained to prolong their lifespan. Ghana and China established diplomatic relations in July 5, 1960. The armed forces of both countries have endeavoured to boost relationships over the years.

GAF has benefited immensely from China including donation of computers, camouflage uniforms, vehicle grant of four million Yuan, troop accommodation, acquisition of fighter aircrafts, construction of Burma Hall and recently construction of the Ministry of Defence Complex.
