Child education, a right not a privilege

Mankessim (C/R), Dec. 13, GNA 96 Mr Mohammed Ackonu, Headmaster of the Gomoa Potsin TI Ahmadiyya Secondary School has re-emphasised that education of the child is a right, but not a privilege.

He said parents should not regard their expenditure on their children’s education as favours, because a child reserved the right to sue the parents for denying him or her education.

Mr Ackonu made the assertion at the first Speech and Prize-giving Day of Global Doors International School at Mankessim. The headmaster appealed to teachers not to regard education as preparing the child for only examination and urged them to give a holistic training to children to make them 93all-round=94 persons. He noted that many people were found wanting in the society because the education they received did not enable them to develop their full potentials.

Mr Jibrin Moomen Dimbie, General Manager of Ahmadiyya Schools, admonished parents not to hide behind the Capitation Grant to shirk their responsibilities.

They should provide their children with uniforms and stationery, which the grant did not cover.

Speaking on the theme: 93Many things that we need can wait but the child’s education cannot wait=94, Mr Dimbie reminded parents not to defer the payment of their children’s fees and rather use the money for clothing and funerals.

=93The child’s education cannot be deferred=94, he stressed and urged parents to invest in their children’s education now to enable them to reap the benefits during their old age. The Headmaster, Osman Adam, in a report said the school which started in 2001 with 91 pupils now had an enrolment of 317 pupils with 19 teachers and 10 non teaching staff. He said a computer training centre has been established to make the pupils computer literate.

Mr Adam said the school was ready to open a Junior Secondary School (JSS) next academic year. He expressed appreciation for the support the school was getting from the Mfantseman District Directorate of Education.
