Chickenpox outbreak in Nsawam Prisons

Nsawam, (E/R), Feb. 10, GNA -There have been an outbreak of chickenpox disease in the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons. So far 35 prisoners out of the 540 inmates in the “remand camp” of the prison have been infected with the disease. In all, 65 inmates of the prisons have been infected with the disease.

Dr. Mawuli Gyakobo, Akuapim South District Director of Health Services made this known, when the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana presented a number of items valued at 10 million cedis to the inmates at the prison on Tuesday to help stem the outbreak.

The items included 25 gallons of denzal germicide, 20 gallons of parazone, 10 gallons dental disinfectants, 5,000 capsules of chloramphenicol, 5,000 capsules of tetracycline, 3,000 capsules of doxycline, 5,000 paracetamol tablets, 4,000 capsules of amoxicillin and 5,000 multivitamin tablets.

Presenting the items, Mr Frank Boateng, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana said his outfit would continue its support to institutions to bring healthcare to the doorsteps of the under-privileged and the poor as a means of improving the quality of life of the citizenry.

He 10 Feb. 04said the society has recently launched a series of public health initiatives that would be available to every one free of charge through the community pharmacies.

Mr Boateng expressed gratitude to the management of Kinapharmal Limited, Kama Health Services Limited, Densu Industries Limited, M and G Pharmaceuticals, Unichem Ghana Limited, Bright Pharmacy and the Bernwett Company Limited through whose support the items were made available. Mr. Sylvester Rabbles, Chief Superintendent of Prisons, who received the items on behalf of the inmates commended Dr Gyakobo and the donors and appealed to other benevolent societies to come to the aid of the prisons to solve some of the health problems facing it.
