Charlotte Azurago voted best teacher

Charlotte Azurago of St. Charles Luwanga Primary School in the Bawku West District was yesterday adjudged the overall Best Teacher in Ghana for 2003 at a colourful durbar held at Wa to mark the National and World Teachers? Day.

She was presented with a cheque for ?280 million to finance the construction of a house in a location of her choice. The second and third national best teachers received saloon cars each.

In a speech read on his behalf, President Kufuor expressed his displeasure at the behaviour of some teachers who did not work but drew salaries. He urged such teachers to turn a new leaf and lead lives worthy of emulation.

Describing this conduct as unacceptable, he challenged the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana National Association of Teachers to make a joint effort to reverse the trend.

According to the report, twenty-seven other teaching and non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service were honoured for their outstanding performance and contribution to the upliftment of education. Their prizes included television sets, refrigerators, gas cookers, solar lamps and certificates of honour.
