A Customs officer, Mr. John Armah was on last Monday lynched by a mob at Mambogba, a village near Nakpanduri in the Northern Region.
The deceased was on duty on the border between Ghana and Togo when a misunderstanding arose between him and a young man.
Speaking to the GNA the Public Relations Officer of CEPS, Mr. Ahmed Kanton said the young man was entering Mambogba from Togo and when Mr. Armah wanted to search his luggage he refused.
Mr. Kanton said because the deceased was alone on duty, the young man slapped him. This infuriated the officer who used the butt of the AK 47 rifle he was holding to hit the attacker and this resulted in a cut on his head.
He said the man was sent to the Nalerigu Hospital for treatment. However, after the news had gone round some armed men from the village attacked the officer and killed him.
He said one member of the mob also died of gunshot. Mr. Kanton said the young man had since been treated and discharged and he was assisting the police in their investigations.
