The Mayor of Ghana’s national capital is borrowing a limb from technology to keep the city clean.
Alfred Vanderpuije told Joy FM on Monday that more than 200 cameras are being installed in the city to monitor the waste situation in Accra.
The “smart” waste management system, as Vanderpuije calls it, will help the Accra Metropolitan Assembly know when waste bins are stolen as well as where they are needed.
They will also help the Assembly to know when to move in to empty waste bins, as well as keep track of areas in the city that may be taken over by filth.
Accra is currently reeling under tonnes of waste, a situation, which has necessitated a one hundred-day ultimatum issued by the Vice President to the Mayor, to ensure the city is sanitised.
The ultimatum comes on the heels of a cholera outbreak in the capital, which has affected more than 500 people and killed five from June till now.
