Accra, Oct. 17, GNA – Catholic worship in Burma Camp on Sunday received a boost with the dedication of a modern church building to serve members of the faith in the community and its environs. The Church has been christened the Saint Catherine Catholic Church, Burma Camp
Construction work on the chapel started in the early 1970’s but the project grounded for about 15 years due to several factors. Work on the project resumed in July 1992 till its almost completed stage this year. The remainder of the project includes the building of a Parish Hall and Rectory, the completion of the church’s wall and the landscaping of the church premises and the construction of the steeple and a Grotto, and other necessary works.
Before then, the Catholic community in Burma camp worshipped in turns together with the Anglicans and the Methodist in the old Methodist/Presbyterian chapel in Burma Camp.
Lieutenant General Seth Obeng, Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), handed the church to the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most reverend Dominic Andoh.
In a message to parishioners to mark the event, Lt. Gen. Obeng urged them to use the occasion to reflect on the life the Patron Saint-Saint Catherine of Sienna and courageously stand for the truth. He reminded them that whatever spiritual benefits they received for worshipping in that church would be of no consequence unless they used it for the benefit of the society.
He prayed that God opened the ears and hearts of all who worshipped in the Church to hear and feel His presence, as they worshipped Him in spirit and in truth.
Most Reverend Andoh who dedicated the Church urged parishioners to be fortified with the weapon of prayer. He tasked them to pray unceasingly for the Church, the Clergy and for the nation and its leaders.
The Archbishop also urged them to use the opportunity to renew their baptismal oath and resolve to strengthen their faith in the Church.
The dedication was preceded by a procession from the Nicholson stadium to the Church premises, after which a tape was cut and a plaque unveiled to mark the day. 17 Oct. 04
