Catholic Archbishop lauds Black Stars Supporters’

The out-going Archbishop of the Kumasi Archdiocese of the Catholic Church has praised hundreds of spectators at the Ghana-Lesotho 2014 World Cup qualifier at the Baba Yara stadium for their high sense of maturity and comportment when flood lights at the stadium suddenly went off.

The Most Reverend Thomas Kwaku Mensah said, but for the high sense of patriotism and maturity exhibited by the spectators the situation could have resulted into chaos at the stadium.

Addressing a cross section of catholic students in non-catholic schools in the Kumasi Archdiocese at the weekend, Most Reverend Mensah said the way and manner the spectators behaved indicated that football followers in the country and particularly Kumasi were truly sports enthusiasts.

He explained that in such situations, spectators were likely to violently confront organizers and this could have resulted in a disaster.

The first leg of the World Cup qualifier which Ghana won 7-0 against the Crocodiles of Lesotho was nearly marred when the flood lights suddenly went off in the early stages of the second half as Ghana was leading Lesotho by 4-0.

Most Rev. Thomas K. Mensah condemned the situation and said that it was a total disgrace to the country which is noted for good organization of sporting events.

He entreated Ghanaians to learn a lesson from what happened during the game and be alert for unforeseen circumstances in future events.

Most Reverend Mensah also advised the students to develop the habit of planning ahead for eventualities in life.**
