Cape Coast Metropolis undertakes massive clean-up

Cape Coast, Feb. 16, GNA- Citizens in and around the Cape Coast Metropolis together with personnel from Zoomlion Company, security services, as well as some identifiable groups, on Saturday, undertook a five-hour massive clean-up exercise to rid the metropolis of the huge filth and stench that had engulfed the area. They de-silted gutters and drains, which were mostly clogged with polythene and sachet water rubbers, cleared weedy areas; swept and scrubbed the Kotokuraba market and its surrounding stores. The Fire Service provided water from its Fire Tenders to flush the drains and gutters.

The exercise was in-line with the government’s plan to ensure good sanitary conditions in the country within 100 days. Among the security services that took part in the exercise were personnel from the Prisons and the Police, while the identifiable groups included the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Market women, the Ankaful Youth Association as well as Staff of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly.

Mrs Rhoda Donkor, the Central Regional Coordinator of Zoomlion, after the exercise, echoed concerns on the need to maintain clean environment, to avoid the spread of communicable diseases. She, in that regard, urged the Assembly to make good its promise of enforcing its sanitation bye-laws in order to prosecute people who flouted them.
