Pramso (Ash), Dec 8, GNA – The Canadian Surgical Eye Expeditions (CANSEE), an international non-governmental organization, has restored sight for 153 totally and partially blind people from all over the country at the Saint Michael’s Catholic Hospital at Pramso in the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District.
The free surgical operations that lasted five days were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Canada in collaboration with the management of the hospital.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency at Pramso after the exercise on Wednesday Dr Linda Tranchemontagne, the leader of the team, said all the 153 had cataract of different magnitudes. She said this was the 10th time the NGO had undertaken the exercise at the hospital and that it has become an annual event. Dr Ben Ababio-Danso, an Ophthalmologist at the hospital, said cataract was the number one cause of blindness in the district and the country and called on people to report to the hospital early for treatment.
He said the hospital had been recording over 500 cataract surgeries every year and this was an indication of the high prevalent rate of the disease in the country. GNA
