Cabinet to take up rehabilitation of Police Hospital

Accra, Aug. 10, GNA – The Ministries of Health and the Interior would present to cabinet a detailed report on the status of the Accra Police Hospital, to pave the way for major rehabilitation of the medical facility.

This follows a tour of the hospital on Monday by Dr George Sipa Yankey, Minister of Health, Mr Cletus Avoka, Minister of the Interior and Mr Paul Tawiah Quaye, Inspector General of Police, to assess the level of deterioration of the facility.

Since its establishment in the early 1970s, the hospital has seen no major rehabilitation, leading to leaking roofs, obsolete equipment and increasing number of patients among a host of problems. Dr Sipa Yankey said works on a new structure of the hospital, which was stalled, would recommence soon to ensure that it was completed in time to help address the congestion.

He also announced that two buildings of the Forestry Commission located behind the hospital, which are not being used and are in a deplorable state, would be rehabilitated to be used by the hospital to bring it to the status of a referral Hospital.

Dr Sipa Yankey said his ministry was taking inventory of all health facilities in the country to know how much assistance would be needed to ensure efficient healthcare delivery.

He commended the staff for their commitment to duty despite the trying conditions under which they operate and promised to include them in the government’s subsidized vehicle allocation to health workers to ease their transport problem.

Mr Avoka asked the staff to continue to remain committed to their work as government tried to address the problems. 10 Aug. 09
