Kenya Premier League giants Gor Mahia FC have officially named Charles Kwablan Akonnor as their new head coach, ushering in what fans hope will be a new chapter of dominance for the record Kenyan champions.
The former Ghana national team coach, affectionately known as C.K Akonnor, was unveiled in a statement shared by the club. Gor Mahia expressed confidence in his leadership, describing him as a “seasoned tactician” with the pedigree to guide the club to greater heights.
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Charles Akonnor from Ghana as our new Head Coach. The former Black Stars manager brings a wealth of experience,” the club posted on its official social media pages. “Welcome to Mahia, Coach Akonnor.”
Joining Akonnor in the dugout is fellow Ghanaian Bismark Kobi Mensah, who will serve as assistant coach. The pair previously worked within Ghana’s domestic league system and bring a rich understanding of African football, both at club and national levels.
Akonnor, 50, is best remembered for captaining and later managing Asante Kotoko, before rising to coach the Black Stars of Ghana from 2020 to 2021. His coaching résumé includes stints at Dreams FC, Hearts of Oak, and AshantiGold SC, with a reputation for nurturing young talent and promoting disciplined, attacking football.
