Zini (U/W), Sept. 13, GNA – The Buwa Traditional Council in the Sissala West District has expressed unhappiness about the poor performance of Junior High School (JHS) candidates in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in recent years.
The Council blamed the situation on the lack of teachers, inadequate parental supervision as well as too many video cinemas in the area.
Kuoro Barecheh Nlowie Baninye II, Divisional Chief of Niator and Acting President of the Buwa Traditional Council expressed these concerns during the Council’s general meeting at Zini in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region.
Kuoro Baninye appealed to the Ghana Education Service to ban the use of mobile phones among JHS students and also post more teachers to the area.
He also proposed that the government institute a one year compulsory National Service Scheme for Senior High School (SHS) graduates.
He said this would enable them fill in the vacancies created by the shortage of teachers and also to keep them occupied while they await their results.
Kuoro Baninye appealed to parents to be more alert on the activities of their children in order to prevent them from using their leisure time to attend video shows.
