Businessman jailed three months for assault

Cape Coast, 13 Sept. GNA – The Cape Coast Circuit Court, on Monday sentenced a 40-year-old businessman to three months imprisonment in hard labour for inflicting knife wounds on his nephew. The suspect, whose name was simply given as Nanabanyin, pleaded guilty to assault.

Chief Inspector Augustine Amonoo, told the Court presided over by Mr Kwame Ohene Essel, that at about 1600 hours on September 5, this year, the suspect slapped his nephew, Nana Essilfie without provocation, which degenerated into a fight. He said Nanabanyin later inflicted a deep cut on the right arm and fingers of his nephew, and threatened a witness who attempted to rescue Essilfie.

Opening his defence, Nanabanyin, said he woke up from sleep to see his nephew in his room and when he challenged him, he said he had come for iced water, when he Essilfie knew that power supply to the room had been disconnected. Nanabanyin said he suspected foul play since he had lost cash and personal effects through stealing.
