Nadowli (U/W), Dec.18, GNA – Extensive bushfires has resulted in the burning of food and cash crops belonging to a number of farmers in the Nadowli District.
This season sixty-four acres worth of maize and 10 acres of soyabeans belonging to the Sombo Naa, Naa Dr. Banka Oraa II had been destroyed in fire.
The soya beans were burnt in the farm while the five heaps of maize from his farm were also burnt simultaneously in his yard at Sombo.
Mr Abu Kansangbata, Nadowli District Chief Executive, said this to members of the Nadowli District Assembly at its second ordinary meeting at Nadowli on Saturday.
He said at Kojokperi, a farmer also lost his 20 acres maize farm in fire while three other farmers had their 20 acres each of maize destroyed.
Similarly, another farmer at Tabiasi had his 20 acres maize farm grazed down in bushfire.
Mr Kansangbata also complained about the burning down of low and high tension electricity poles in the communities and suggested that the assembly construct concrete pads around the poles as a long term measure to protect the poles from bush fires.
The DCE said despite the district assembly’s support to National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana National Fire Service to sensitise community members on the hazards of bushfires, its menace was still high in the district.
Mr Kansangbata suggested to the assembly members to take keen interest and strengthen their various disaster volunteer groups and fire volunteer groups to help educate the people on the hazards of bush burning.
He announced that the assembly had collected GH¢22,929.69 from its internally generated sources within the year and urged members to intensify their revenue mobilization efforts to enable the assembly to undertake more development projects.
