The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has set the record straight on the ownership of the Nkawkaw Sports Stadium, which is currently undergoing major reconstruction after years of neglect.
Speaking to journalists during a tour of the facility, the Abetifi MP and former Minister for Food and Agriculture said the refurbished stadium remains the property of the Government of Ghana and is being developed through the National Sports Authority (NSA), not as a private venture.
“I must reiterate that this project is not a personal project,” Dr. Acheampong said. “I am only supporting the community through the NSA to build it. It belongs to the government; it doesn’t belong to any individual, including myself.”
He emphasized that his role in the project is that of a facilitator and financier, not an owner. “This is Nkawkaw Sports Stadium, owned by the National Sports Authority, that I am supporting to reconstruct,” he explained.
The stadium, which had been in a dilapidated state for years, is now undergoing a significant facelift. Dr. Acheampong said the facility, once completed, will not only serve football and other sports clubs in the area but also provide a venue for local schools and broader community events.
His comments come amid speculation and public curiosity over who owns the facility, given his prominent role and financial backing in its redevelopment.
Dr. Acheampong, who has served as Member of Parliament for Abetifi since 2017, is one of the leading figures vying to become the NPP’s next presidential candidate.
The rehabilitation of the Nkawkaw Sports Stadium is widely seen as part of a broader effort to revitalise public infrastructure in the Eastern Region and improve youth and community engagement through sports.
