British team calls on High Commissioner

Accra, July 21, GNA – The Acting British High Commissioner, Mr Robin Gwynn on Thursday commended Government efforts to reduce poverty and create wealth to better the lot of ordinary Ghanaians saying she was one of the most forward-looking countries in Africa. Mr Gwynn said this when a group of Raleigh International Venturers called on him as part of a three-week visit to Ghana. He briefed the group about the role of the British High Commission in Ghana and said annually, the British government gave Ghana a grant of about 65 million pounds in development assistance, and “all of this is untied to the use of British goods and services”, he said.

This was contained in a statement issued from the High Commission in Accra.

Raleigh International is a UK Voluntary Organisation working on community development projects in various parts of the country for the past six years through cultural exchange programmes and expeditions. The group is made up of 18 students and staff from Coquet High School in the United Kingdom and two Ghanaian Youths. While in Ghana, the group would visit a number of communities to undertake community and environmental development projects.

The expedition would take them to Samanhyia Battor in the Afram Plains where in collaboration with the Afram Plains Development Organisation, they would build toilets for households in the community. They would also interact with some school children, move to Mole National Park to continue an environmental project started by previous Raleigh groups and visit some historical and educational sites in the Central Region. 21 July 05
