Tarkwa (W/R), Oct 7, GNA – Mr Nicholas Westcott, British High Commissioner to Ghana has said Britain’s interest in Ghana is to see to it that it achieves peaceful elections. He expressed the hope that there would be no minors and double voting by people.
Mr Westcott said this at Tarkwa during an interaction with the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Chief Executive at his residence at Tarkwa yesterday.
He said in Ghana and Britain’s relationship, education has been paramount, adding, a ten year partnership agreement on education and health has been signed between Ghana and Britain. Mr Westcott said he would link Tarkwa to some communities in Britain which have certain features in common. He also promised to promote cultural and education programmes, as well as trade and investments. He said Britain has made huge investments in Ghana which include communication and petroleum. Touching on Tourism, Mr Westcott said it was fascinating and interesting to see forts and castles along the coast of Ghana, adding that, he was particularly interested in going to visit Nsamankow battlefield located in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality where Sir. Charles McCarthy was killed.
Madam Tapper, Political Officer, British Embassy, said the Embassy in conjunction with the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has organised debates among the leaders of the competing political parties, helping the youth to understand electoral processes, and talking to Muslims Chiefs in respect of peaceful elections. Mr George Mireku Duker, Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Chief Executive said the level of education in the area was low and expressed the hope that with the sister relation to be created between the Municipality and one in Britain, will lead to the granting of scholarships, provision of teaching aids and logistics to promote quality teaching and learning. Mr Duker called for more investment in the area, saying, Aboso Glass Factory and Bonsa Tyre Company were some of the sectors that needs to be revived.
Mr Westcott has earlier visited Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, and the University of Mines and Technology Tarkwa, where he expressed his satisfaction about the expansion of the University. 7 Oct. 08
