Sumbrungu, (U/E) Feb. 14, GNA – The Bolgatanga Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) is to sanction teachers, especially head teachers, who fail to perform. The directorate is also to monitor teachers’ school attendance and punctuality and supervise their performances. It will also institute an entrance examination for pupils entering Primary six to ensure good results at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the Senior Secondary School (SSS) examinations.
These measures were announced by the acting Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Nicholas N. Nayembil at the Bolgatanga West Circuit teachers’ forum at Sumbrungu, near Bolgatanga.
Mr. Nayembil deplored the attitude of some teachers towards work, saying academic performance in schools in the Municipality had fallen too low. He lamented over the zero per cent scored by the Sumbrungu JSS in the last BECE.
Mr. Nayembil urged the teachers to re-examine themselves and change positively in the writing of lesson notes, improvise teaching and learning materials and ensure that pupils and students were always well dressed, adding that they should show commitment and dedication to work and do their best in the face of difficulties. He also advised them to update their knowledge through distance learning programmes.
The circuit supervisor, Madam Alice Awani said like the peoples’ forum the teachers’ forum was organised for teachers to meet with personnel of the GES to discuss issues pertaining to their performance. Madam Awani admitted that even though there were some hardworking teachers, there were others who were lazy and appealed to them to be up and doing.
The teachers appealed to the authorities to help them with means of transport and textbooks to enhance their work.
