Board to spur SARI’s commercial viability

The new board of the Savannah Agriculture Research Institute (SARI) has expressed its preparedness to make the Institute commercially viable through advice to help promote research and innovative products to generate income.

Dr Naaminog Karbo, Director of Cognate Institute said this at the inauguration of a seven member board at the weekend to run the affairs of the institute at Nyankpala, in the Tolon district.

Mr Alhassan Andani, Managing Director of the Stanbic Bank chairs the board and other members included Dr Karbo, Mrs Gina Odarteifio, Mr Mohammed Adam Nashiru, Dr Stephen K. Nutusgah, Mr William Boakye-Achempong as well as a representative of the Director-General of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) yet to be appointed.

Dr Karbo who spoke on behalf of the board chairman said the management would also ensure that the institute developed novelty ways of preventing farmers from burning the bush before farming activities to boost soil fertility, increase farm produce and conserve biodiversity.

He said the board would initiate measures that would encourage scientists at the institute to develop climate smart agriculture technologies to help farmers to adapt to climate change effects. Dr Karbo commended the outgoing board for reducing the infrastructure deficit and introducing other initiatives.

Dr Abdullah Baba Salifu, Director-General of the CSIR charged the board to be proactive and provide the necessary counsel to ignite the development of the institute. He advised the board members to put in place effective measures to protect the assets of the institute especially its lands from encroachers.

He urged the staff to be more committed and work hard and develop farming technologies to address the many challenges facing farmers in the Northern sector of the country.
