Kim Lars Bjorkegren is set to take temporary charge of Ghana’s senior men’s team for their crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Somalia in November.
The Black Queens head coach will lead an interim technical team formed by a five-member Ghana Football Association committee after Carlos Queiroz left his post. Queiroz departed following Ghana’s defeats by Cote d’Ivoire and The Gambia in their opening two qualifying matches.
Bjorkegren will be assisted by Medeama SC head coach Ibrahim Tanko and current Black Stars assistant coach Godwin Attram. The team is expected to oversee the home-and-away fixtures against Somalia, which are scheduled to take place between 11 and 14 November 2026.
The temporary appointment will give the coaching search committee more time to assess candidates during October and November before selecting a permanent successor to Queiroz.
Ghana are already under pressure in the qualifying campaign after losing their first two matches. With limited scope for further mistakes, the Black Stars must improve their results if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alive.
They also missed the previous edition of the continental tournament, increasing the importance of the November matches and the demands facing the interim coaching team.
Bjorkegren’s expected move to the men’s side comes while he continues to oversee the Black Queens. His existing duties with the women’s national team will remain an important consideration as he prepares for the latest assignment.
Soon after the November international window, he will have to bring the Black Queens together for their intercontinental play-off matches in the race to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Managing both national teams will require careful organisation as Ghana pursue qualification in the men’s and women’s competitions.
Bjorkegren has previously worked with the Black Stars during Otto Addo’s tenure, but taking charge of the team for the November qualifiers would represent a more significant responsibility.
Tanko offers experience from his work with Medeama and from his previous time as coach of the Black Meteors, Ghana’s men’s under-23 team. Attram is already involved in the Black Stars’ technical structure as an assistant coach.
Their appointments are intended to provide continuity and experience while the committee completes its search for a permanent head coach. The interim arrangement follows the committee’s request for additional time and avoids rushing the selection process while ensuring Ghana can prepare properly for the Somalia fixtures.
The November games will be an immediate test of the new setup. The Black Stars need positive results to improve their position before the next scheduled opportunity for national-team duties in March 2027.
The interim team must therefore prepare the squad, respond to the weaknesses exposed in the opening defeats and give Ghana the best possible chance of remaining in contention for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
