Former President Jerry John Rawlings has questioned why former Attorney General Betty Mould-Iddrisu was left off the hook in the prosecution of the Ghc51-million judgment debt saga, even though, according to him, she was complicit in the payment of the said money.
An enraged Rawlings said Thursday that businessman Alfred Woyome was acquitted and discharged by an Accra High Court of two counts of willfully causing financial loss to the state and defrauding by false pretences because his accomplices and “collaborators – Mrs. Mould-Iddrisu and one other person – were left off the hook.”
“Woyome the thief has been left off the hook because some of our people who were in Government who were complicit in the thievery weren’t produced for interrogation to provide vital evidence that will show that Woyome is a thief: Betty Mould and one other person.
“So because his collaborators were left off the hook, he also had to be left off the hook, so the rot keeps festering,” the ex-military leader told the family of one Isaac Tetteh when they called on him at his residence in Accra to inform him about the death of their loved one.
“At the Attorney General’s Office, those who collaborated who should have been called have been left off the hook: how then do you sentence Woyome? Then we say we are fighting corruption. We are not serious.
“Meanwhile all of them have hurriedly gone to take positions in the party…to protect themselves and we are also voting for them blindly. Are we fools? Are we so stupid?” Mr. Rawlings wondered angrily.
Mrs. Mould-Iddrisu was elected as second Vice Chairperson of the governing NDC late last year at the party’s national congress. She told Bola Ray on Starr Chat on the eve of judge John Ajet-Nassam’s judgment delivery on the Woyome saga that she was never complicit in any wrongdoing as far as the payment of the Ghc51-m judgment debt to the NDC financier was concerned.
Mr. Ajet-Nassam told the Court he was not convinced by the prosecution’s case, especially when they failed to present key witnesses – Betty Mould-Iddrisu and her former Deputy Ebo Barton Oduro – as witnesses in the case.
