Mr Kwame Kuma, the National Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has appealed to commercial drivers to be circumspect as the Christmas approaches.
He expressed concern about the spate of road crashes in the country and pleaded with the drivers to aim at observing traffic regulations in order to improve road safety and help avoid loss of human lives.
Mr Kuma made the appeal in an in interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Monday.
He said it is important to highlight some unwanted behaviours such as speeding, unnecessary overtaking, drunk driving and the refusal to observe mandatory rest hours as these could lead to accidents.
He said such carnage on the roads continue to affect the nation’s human, financial and material resources.
Mr Kuma reminded drivers of their obligation and contractual agreement of driving passengers to and from their destinations safely.
He said there was the need to avoid nagging passengers and drive with care.
Mr Kuma said the fading road markings on some prominent streets were also a concern and appealed to the Highways Authority to re-mark them whilst urging drivers to undertake routine maintenance of their vehicles.
He wished all drivers a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.
