Bad bridges over Birim River is hindering food evacuation

Akim Asamama (E/R), Nov. 23, GNA – Cost of food items in the Akim Asamama market had gone up because farmers at Abrenya could not cross rivers Birim and Abrasu with their produce because of their high tide. Madam Georgina Odei, a resident of Akim Asamama, told the GNA that because of the high tide as a result of the heavy rains in recent times farmers could not cart foodstuffs like cocoyam, maize, plantain, vegetabl= es and fowls across the two rivers.

The case of Akim Asamama is not an isolated one at the Atiwa Distric= t since residents in four communities in the district had to cross rivers without good bridges over them before they could send their foodstuffs to=

buying centres on market days. Some of the affected communities are Abrenya, Akwadoaso and Asunafo and the rivers are Abrasu, Sene and Anaso.

River Birim is the longest river in the district running through man= y communities but without good bridges and that makes it difficult for farm= ers to take their produce across the river to the marketing centres.
