Australian Art exhibition opens in Accra

A 10-day Australian Government touring art exhibition Message Stick, which is an indigenous identity in Urban Australia opened at the Alliance Francaise in Accra on Monday.

The Message Stick exhibition was organised by the Australian High Commission in partnership with the Alliance Francaise Art Gallery and Geodrill Ghana Limited, an Australian mining services company.

It would feature 21 significant works by 11 Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islander artists who are at the forefront of the contemporary arts scene in Australia.

Mr. Chris Williams, a renowned indigenous musician in Australia, will feature on the exhibition’s opening night, playing the indigenous musical instrument known as the didgeridoo.

“He will use his visit to Ghana to make a number of media and public presentations on Australian indigenous music and culture.”

Mr. William Billy Williams, Australian High Commissioner said the art works would present a unique political and social perspective of contemporary Australian history and culture.

“I feel very privileged to be able to showcase the significant artistic achievements of Indigenous Australians to a Ghanaian audience,” he said.

He said, “Australia and the countries of Africa have never been more interlinked and connected through growing trade and investment, development and multilateral cooperation and through people-to-people links.”

The exhibition started its overseas tour in New Caledonia, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea and would be highlighted in Abuja, Nigeria, and Cairo, Egypt, and travel to the Middle East and India.**
