Atukpai ends Homowo Festival

The chiefs and people of the Atukpai traditional area in Accra, on Saturday began activities to mark the end of this year’s Homowo Festival and also to remember their past heroes.

The event had been abandoned for over a 100 years because the Atukpai stool had been vacant for a long time. The Public Relation Officer of the Stool, Reverend Samuel Okwei Mensah said the celebration, which had been re-introduced to be an annual affair, was aimed at creating awareness and promoting interaction between the people of Atukpai and their leadership to steer the socio-economic and cultural development of the area.

As part of activities to mark the celebration, the elders of the stool, led by Nii Tetteh Tsuru II, Otukpai Mantse trekked to the meditation seat of the father of the family, Nii Tetteh I, on the Hill Top at Kwabenya to pay homage to their ancestors whose toil had left a legacy of glory for the current generation.

Later in the day the Atukpai Asafo Company, matched through some streets of the Atukpai area to meet the in-coming entourage of chiefs, elders and queen mothers from Kwabenya where a mini durbar was held at TA Tsoshioshie.

At the ceremony, where the warriors of the stool were assembled for movement to the war front in times of war, various rituals including the holy water bath, wreath laying, libation pouring, among other things were performed to end the event.
