Attorney-General lacks clout – Kwabena Agyapong

Former Presidential Spokesperson in the Kufuor administration, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong says the President’s nominee to the Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General, Madam Marietta Oppong, does not clouts to occupy that position.

According to the senior NPP member, the nominee does not appear to be strong enough to take hard-hitting decisions even to the detriment of the government.

Mr. Agyapong said Ghana has had a tradition of having people of strong legal background as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, suggesting that Madam Marietta Oppong may not be able to stand firm and defy orders of the President should there be the need to do.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsfile programme on Saturday February 9, 2013, Mr. Agyapong said the A-G nominee “does not have clout at the Bar”.

In a sharp rebuttal, Minister designate at the Presidency Abdul Rashid Pelpuo has described as unfair criticism, the attack on the A-G designate.

Mr. Pelpuo rather advocated that competence and track record of the nominee are what should be critically examined but not her political affiliation.

He said the fact that she is not widely known as a politician, does not mean she cannot take bold decisions.
